Blaming Nollywood won’t fix broken society — Charles Inojie
Famous Nigerian actor, Charles Inojie, has defended the film industry against claims that it is responsible for societal issues. In an interview with Saturday Beat, Inojie highlighted the importance of parents playing a crucial role in instilling proper values in younger generations, rather than blaming Nollywood for society’s ills.
Inojie pointed out that while films often showcase issues like ritual killings, spiritual fortification, internet fraud, and organ harvesting, these problems are not created by the industry but reflect the reality of society. He argued that these themes are a reflection of real-life occurrences, and should be viewed as a tool for raising awareness rather than being criticized.
The actor questioned whether it’s fair to blame all Nollywood films for focusing on ritual themes, noting that the very existence of such stories indicates that these societal issues are real. He said, “We should applaud these movies for exposing these problems instead of condemning them. Have you not heard of pastors burying human bodies for spiritual power, or influential men engaging in strange rituals? These things happen in real life, and when addressed in films, they get unfairly criticized.”
Inojie also pointed out that the real problem lies in how some parents fail to question their children’s sources of wealth. He emphasized the need for families to prioritize values like hard work and integrity. “We need to return to teaching our children the dignity of labor and the dangers of seeking quick fixes. Nollywood is not the problem,” he concluded.
