LAGOS, Nigeria — As Nigeria continues to wrestle with deep-rooted ethnic divisions and political favoritism, Godwin Anebi Ameh, an entrepreneur, former Coordinator of the Middle Belt Forum (Lagos Chapter) and an active member of the Global Ethnic Movement (GEM), has made a passionate call for the nation to prioritize competence over ethnicity in leadership.
In an exclusive chat with GEM Voice, Mr. Godwin Ameh who hails from Benue state but currently reside in Lagos spoke candidly about the detrimental impact of ethnic nepotism on national development, warning that tribalism in political appointments and elections has stunted the country’s progress and deepened national disunity.
“Ethnic division in Nigeria is largely driven by personal interests and selfish agendas,” Godwin said. “If we are truly committed to national development, especially at the leadership level, we must stop choosing leaders based solely on ethnicity or zoning. Leadership must be rooted in competence, integrity, and vision — not tribal affiliation.”
Mr. Godwin Ameh believes that embracing a merit-based leadership system will unlock Nigeria’s true potential. According to him, a competent leadership can steer the country toward sustainable development in key sectors such as business, education, foreign investment, youth empowerment, and gender inclusion.
“With unity and competent leadership, Nigeria can achieve greatness,” he added. “We can attract foreign investors, promote entrepreneurship, create jobs for our youth, support women in leadership, and develop our vast talent pool. There is far more to gain in unity than in division.”
He also warned against the manipulation of ethnic sentiments by political elites, urging Nigerians to resist being tools in tribal conflicts that only serve to divide and exploit the masses.
“When we allow ourselves to be used for tribal wars by politicians, we end up being the real losers. It’s time for us to wise up, embrace unity, and engage one another as Nigerians first — not just as Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, or any other ethnic identity.”
As an active member of the Global Ethnic Movement ,Mr. Godwin Ameh expressed confidence in the organization’s ability to spark positive transformation across Nigeria. He views GEM as more than just a platform for dialogue — but a movement for deep cultural and political renewal.
“The Global Ethnic Movement can manifest in diverse ways — from cultural revitalization to political mobilization,” he said. “If harnessed effectively, GEM can become a powerful force for peace, unity, and national progress.”
Godwin Anebi Ameh’s call for a shift from tribal loyalty to national interest is a timely reminder of what is truly at stake for Nigeria. As the country moves toward future elections and new leadership, voices like his underscore the urgent need to put competence first — not just for the sake of efficiency, but for the unity and survival of the nation.
