The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a directive to all international airlines operating in the country, mandating them to enforce the $10,000 currency declaration requirement for inbound passengers.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu said the move is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s anti-money laundering framework and ensuring compliance with international financial standards.
The directive, dated April 24, 2025, instructs airlines to announce the currency declaration rule either during the flight or before landing. Passengers carrying cash or negotiable instruments exceeding $10,000—or its equivalent—must declare it upon arrival in Nigeria.
Airlines are also required to distribute currency declaration forms onboard for passengers to complete prior to arrival.
Achimugu noted that despite prior notifications, some airlines have not fully complied. He warned that enforcement will be strictly monitored and that non-compliant carriers will face sanctions.
“The cooperation of airlines is essential in supporting Nigeria’s obligations under global financial regulations,” the NCAA emphasized.
