President Donald Trump on Tuesday escalated his long-running attacks on the Obama administration, accusing former President Barack Obama of “treason” and calling for his prosecution. The accusations stem from a controversial new report that claims officials in the Obama White House fabricated intelligence about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Trump’s remarks came during an Oval Office press event with visiting Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. When asked whom he believed should be prosecuted in connection to the report, Trump pointed directly at his predecessor.
“Based on what I read — and I read pretty much what you read — it would be President Obama. He started it,” Trump said, referring to the report’s allegation that Obama led a conspiracy to undermine his presidency.
Trump also named several other senior officials from the Obama era as part of what he described as a “treasonous conspiracy,” including then-Vice President Joe Biden, former FBI Director James Comey, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and former CIA Director John Brennan. But he emphasized that Obama was the “leader of the gang.”
The report at the center of the controversy was authored by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and released last Friday. It alleges that Obama-era intelligence officials deliberately manipulated data about Russian election interference to “lay the groundwork for what was essentially a years-long coup against President Trump.”
Gabbard has since sent criminal referrals to the Department of Justice based on the report’s findings, though legal analysts and intelligence experts have widely criticized the claims as politically motivated and lacking credible evidence.
Notably, Gabbard’s assertions contradict the conclusions of multiple investigations conducted between 2019 and 2023 — including criminal, counterintelligence, and bipartisan Senate probes. These investigations unanimously found that Russian operatives interfered in the 2016 U.S. election in a campaign aimed at helping Trump and damaging his opponent, Hillary Clinton.
